SINGH, SHRI KEDAR NATH, M.Com., LL.B. [Congress (I)—Uttar Pradesh, Hapur, 1984]  s. of late Thakur Ramphal Singh; b. at Balwa, District, Sultanpur, 1928: ed. at Uday Pratap College, Varanasi and Allahabad University; m. Shrimati Sonraj Devi, 1955; 3 s. and 1 d.; Advocate; previously associated with (i) Revolutionary Socialist Party, 1951-57, and (ii) Communist Party, 1957-64; Associated with Revolutionary Movement in early age; expelled twice from college for participation in Quit India Movement of 1942 and was also jailed in that connection; arrested at Varanasi being member of Action Committee of Students Movement and jailed at Lucknow, 1946-47; took leading part in all the students’ movements in Uttar Pradesh, 1947-55; was arrested twice during Kisan Movement in Uttar Pradesh and jailed during 1956-63; undertook hunger strike for 21 days for maintaining autonomy of the Universities and restoration of the compulsory recognition to University Students’ Unions; Union Deputy Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, 1971-74 and Agriculture and Irrigation 1974-77; Chairman, Food Industries Ltd. (formerly Modem Bakeries), 1981-84, President, Allahabad University Union, 1953; Joint   Secretary, Railwaymen’s Federation, 1949-50; President, All U.P. Universities and Degree Colleges Students Unions, 1953-54; joined the Bar at Sultanpur, 1956; Member, Fourth Lok Sabha, 1970; Fifth Lok Sabha, 1971-77.

Social activities:  Worked for the expansion of education, particularly to the rural poor; set up premier scientific and technological institutions in rural areas to facilitate the application of modern tools and techniques in the agricultural and allied activities.

Favourite pastime and recreation:  Gardening and Reading.

Special interests:  Kisan Movement.

Travels abroad:  Switzerland, Japan, Germany, U.S.A., U.K., U.S.S.R., Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Bangladesh and Nepal.
