National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) 2016:

          National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance exam is an exam which is conducted by NIFT institute of India. This is a fashion technology institute which is under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

NIFT exam is conducted every year for admission of the students into the various fashion designing courses. (Both UG and PG)

The students are selected mainly through their performance in the NIFT examination and then top scoring candidates are then sent to the next rounds such as interviews and counselling for the final selection.

Important dates for NIFT 2016:

Online registration starts from: 20th October 2015

Online registration closes normally on: 10th January 2016

Online registration closes with late fee on: 16th January 2016 (Late fee is Rs.5000/-)

Admit card download: 21st January 2016

Test date: 14th February 2016

Group discussion and Personal Interview: April-May 2016

Result declaration: May-June 2016

Counselling dates: June 2016 onwards

Exam schedule for NIFT 2016:

         There are two types of test conducted in the NIFT examination session. They are Creative Ability Test (CAT) and General Ability Test (GAT).

Let us check the Exam schedule for both Bachelor and master exams

  • Bachelor of Design :

CAT Exam: 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM. This exam carries 50% of the total weightage

GAT Exam: 2.00 PM to 4 PM. This exam carries 30% of the total weightage

Situation test: This exam carries 20% of the total weightage

  • Master of Design:

             CAT Exam: 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM. This exam carries 40% of the total weightage

             GAT Exam: 2.00 PM to 4 PM. This exam carries 30% of the total weightage.

             GD/PI : This exam carries 30% of the total weightage

  • Bachelor of Fashion Technology

             GAT Exam: 10.00 PM to 1.00 PM. This exam carries 100% of the total weightage

  • Master of Fashion Technology

              GAT Exam: 10.00 PM to 1.00 PM. This exam carries 70% of the total weightage

              GD/PI: This test carries 30% of the total weightage

  • Master of Fashion Management

              GAT Exam: 10.00 PM to 1.00 PM. This exam carries 70% of the total weightage

              GD/PI: This test carries 30% of the total weightage

 

Eligibility criteria for NIFT 2016:

               Students please check the eligibility criteria clearly before appearing for the exam. Eligibility criteria are cross checked during the time of admission. So, please stick to the rules and regulations of the exam.

For Bachelor’s Programs:

  • For opting UG course in NIFT institute applicant must have passed 12th or equivalent examination with the minimum aggregate of 50% from the recognized board or university.
  • The candidate should be 23 years as on October 1st 2015 if he belongs to general category. If the candidate belongs to SC/ST/PWD category then 5 years age exemption is given for that student.
  • For most of the courses in NIFT candidates must have taken Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as the major subjects in the 12th
  • The candidates who are currently pursuing 12th standard can also apply for this exam. But however, they should submit the proof of education during the time of admission.

For PG courses:

  • There is no upper age limit for taking part in this exam.
  • For the PG courses like MFM and M.Des candidate must have completed any graduation from a recognized University or Board.
  • For master of Fashion technology the candidate should have passed the bachelor degree in same branch from NIFT institute or having B.E/B.Tech from any recognized University.
  • The candidates who are currently in the final year of graduation can also apply for this exam. However, they have to submit the graduation certificate at the time of admission.

 

Syllabus for NIFT 2016:

  • Quantitative ability:

             Questions on Addition, multiplication, division, fractions, percentage, rate of interest, work and time, speed and distance, ratio and proportion etc.,

  • Communication ability and English comprehension:

                   It includes questions on synonyms, antonyms, word substitutions, sentence completion, jumbled paragraphs, comprehension passages, etc.,

  • Analytical ability:

             It includes questions based on seating arrangements, blood relations, coding and decoding, syllogisms, etc.,

  • General Knowledge and current affairs:

           It includes questions from current affairs and General awareness around the world.

  • Situation test:

         Short listed candidate for B.Des from the written examination take up this exam which is a hands on test to evaluate candidates ability of material handling and innovative skills of the candidate.

 

Exam Pattern for NIFT 2016:

               The exam is conducted in two modes such as paper/pen based exam and computer based exam. Students can choose their mode of exam while applying for the examination.

Phase 1:

         Paper Based Exam for all UG and PG programs (CAT and GAT exams)

Phase 2:

         Paper based test for Bachelor of Design and Master of Design (CAT and GAT exams)

Phase 3:

         Computer Based test for B.F.Tech, M.F.M and M.F.Tech programmes (GAT exam)

The Phase 1 and Phase 2 consist of 150 questions based on Quantitative ability, English comprehension, communication ability, logical reasoning, GK and current affairs.

The duration of Phase 1 and Phase 2 exam is 2 hours 30 minutes. There is no negative marking scheme for this exam.

Phase 3 exam duration is 3 hours and consists of 150 questions. The language of the written test will be English only.

Sections:

  1. Quantitative ability: 25 questions
  2. Communication ability: 35 questions
  3. English comprehension: 30 questions
  4. Analytic ability: 30 questions
  5. General Knowledge and Current affairs: 30 questions

Thus, total number of questions: 150

Every right answer carries one mark. There is no negative marking scheme for this examination.

 

How to apply for this exam?

  1. Students have to visit the official website of NIFT. http://www.nift.ac.in
  2. Application form for NIFT 2016 will be available from the month of November for download from the official website.
  3. Register with the official site and create your own username and password.
  4. Now using this username and password login into the website and download the application form of NIFT
  5. Now fill in all the details such as full name of the candidate, date of birth, contact number, contact address, active mail id, test center choice, preference of the exam mode, type of exam, etc.,
  6. Upload the digital signature and photograph of the candidate as soon as you fill in the application form.
  7. After this, they have to pay the application fees of Rs.1400 (Online) and Rs.1500 (through DD) for general category students.
  8. For SC/ST candidates an application fee around Rs. 800/- (Online) and Rs.900/-(DD) has to be paid.
  9. Those students who are paying through Demand Draft option will have to post it to below address:

Admit card for NIFT 2016:

                   Admit card is a very important document without which a student is not allowed to enter the examination hall. Admit card contains the details such as full name, test centre choice, duration of the exam, choice of exam mode, language of the question paper, roll number, photograph of the candidate, pen based or computer based exam and so on.

Applicants can download the admit card from January 21st 2016 from the official website of NIFT.

Admit card is also a necessary document during the time of admission. Thus, students please keep your admit card safely since this a mandatory document during the counselling session.

Result declaration:

           The results are planned to be announced on May or June 2016. Applicants can check their results through official website of NIFT by entering the name or roll number of the candidate. As soon as the results are announced, NIFT will call the merit list students for counselling process.

Results are announced only through online mode. Before the results are announced, answer keys are released in the official website. Thus, students can cross check their answers with the answer keys available in the site.

Candidates can also download the result card or score card from the official website. For that

  1. Candidates have to visit the official website.
  2. Now click and download the score card or result card by entering the name of the applicant or roll number/ date of birth of the applicant.
  3. Now click on submit button.
  4. The score card will be downloaded.
  5. You can also take a print out of this for your future reference.

Counselling session:

            The counselling sessions will be officially announced as soon as the results are declared in the website. Candidates please check the official site regularly for any regular updates.

Documents mandatory for counselling session are

  1. Original certificates of 12th and 10th education along with the scanned copy or all mark sheets and photocopy of the mark sheets.
  2. Bank Draft of requisite fee in favor of “NIFT HO” must be brought. Full name of the applicant, name of the program, category, rank of the student, roll number must be mentioned at the back of the Bank Draft.
  3. Proof of date of birth. Both original and photocopy.
  4. Certificated of parents income. For example: Income Tax return 2015, salary certificate of March 2015.
  5. Certificate of medical fitness signed by the medical practitioner in the prescribed format.(original)
  6. An undertaking regarding anti-ragging and refund of fee.
  7. Affidavit of non-judicial stamp paper of Rs.10/- if seeking provisional admission in case result of qualifying examination is yet to be declared.
  8. Caste certificate if the candidate belongs to SC/ST category.

How to prepare for this examination?

       Here are steps to be followed for preparation of NIFT examination:

  1. Take mock test from any website since this will give you an idea about the question pattern, number of questions, sections included, etc.,              
  2. Prepare from previous years question papers and reference books such as Study package for NIFT Entrance examination 2013 by Arihant Publishers, NIFT NID/IIFT Admission Test by Ramesh Publishing House, etc.,
  3. Manage your time perfectly. Time management is the most important thing to get good scores in any entrance examination.
  4. Since there is no negative marking scheme, try to attend all possible questions which will help you to score unexpected marks.
  5. Be cool and relaxed. Don’t panic. This is the main mantra for attending any entrance examination.
