  2. Blue grass airport is a medium sized airport. For several years, city leaders have been trying to increase airline usage and capacity by increasing the length of the runways, adding new terminals, and providing more terminal services for passengers. Their hope is that a larger airport will not only increase revenue, but increase passenger volume, which will result in an increase in tourism revenue to the surrounding area.

Unfortunately, Blue grass discovered that airport expansion is a difficult process. The biggest obstacle is resistance from the surrounding community, which opposes the expansion. Many residents believe a bigger airport will result in increased traffic, noise and air pollution. So far, they have successfully been able to delay expansion and are determined to override the efforts of the community.

The city leaders plan on holding meetings with the local community in which they will present their case for airport expansion. They feel that once they present the full spectrum of economic opportunities, the opposition will be won over.

Questions:

  1. How would the airport benefit by increasing the size of the runways?
  2. Give specific examples of how a bigger airport will increase tourism revenues?
  3. Given your responses to the preceding questions, do you feel the residents should drop their protest? Why?
