- Based on your reading of the novel attempt a character analysis of Holden Caulfield. Use specific instances from the text to support your observations and conclusions.
- What are the major themes explored in the novel. Are they relevant to adolescent life in today’s world. Which elements of the novel are specific to American culture and which do you think are universal? Use examples from the text.
- Holden often behaves like a prophet or a saint pointing out the phoniness and the wickedness in the world around him. Does he manifest signs of phoniness and hypocrisy himself? What does this reveal about his character?
- Attempt a review of Salinger’s novel, meant to be published in a news paper literary column.
