Begum Abida Ahmed, November 9, 1945; 2 s. and 1 d.; Legal Practitioner; joined Indian National Congress as a primary member in 1931; imprisoned for one year for offering individual satyagraha in 1940 and immediately after release was detained as security prisoner for 3 years till April, 1945; has been a Member since 1936 (except for short breaks) of (1) Assam P.C.C., (2) Working Committee, Assam P.C.C. and (3) A.I.C.C; was Member, All India Congress Working Committee, 1946-47; Advocate-General, Assam, 1946-52; led an Indian Lawyers’ Delegation to U.S.S.R., 1955; Member, Indian Delegation to U.N., 1957; Member, Legislative Assembly, Assam, 1935, 1957-62 and 1962-67; Minister of Finance and Revenue, Assam, 1938-39; Minister of Finance, Law, Community Development, Panchayats and Local Self Government, Assam, 1957-62; Minister of Finance, Law, Community Development and Panchayats, Assam, 1962-66; Member, Rajya Sabha, 1952-53 and 1966; went to Malaysia in 1965 as a representative of the Government of India to participate in their Independence Day celebrations and inaugurations of the international mosque and airport at Kuala Lumpur; Union Minister of Irrigation and Power, January 1966—November, 1966; Union Education Minister, November 1966—March 12, 1967; Member, Fourth Lok Sabha, 1967-70; Union Minister for Industrial Development and Company Affairs, March 13, 1967—June 26, 1970; Union Minister for Food, Agriculture, Community Development and Co-operation since June 27, 1970; attended F.A.O.’s Conference in Australia as a Special Guest in September, 1970.
