LAWRENCE, SHRI M. M. [C.P.I. (M)—Kerala, Idukki, 1980] s. of Shri Madamakkal Avara Mathew; b. at Mulavukad Village, Kanayannur Taluk, Ernakulam District, June 15, 1929; ed at St. Alberts High School, Ernakulam and Mamaviral Islam High School, Ernakulam, S.S.L.C.; m. Smt. Baby Lawrence, May 25, 1959; 2 s. and 2 d.; Journalist, (1956-1968); and Social Worker; previously associated with Indian National Congress (student movement); conducted a demonstration of students in 1949, against the ban order then in force in Ernakulam and went underground to avoid arrest; in 1950 was arrested for alleged participation in Edapilly police station raid case and kept in jail as under trial prisoner for 2 years but was acquitted in 1952; arrested in 1961 in connection with the peasant struggle and kept in Jail; arrested on December 30, 1964 and kept, in jail for sixteen months under D.I.R.:; arrested in September, 1975 and detained under MISA during the internal Emergency and was released prior to 1977 Elections; Secretariat Member, Kerala State Committee, C.P.I. (Marxist), from 1978 onwards; Secretary, Water Transport Federation of India, from 1974; Working Committee Member of C.I.T.U.; Member, Industrial Programme Advisory Committee, All India Radio, Trivandrum, 1967-69; Member, Cochin Port Trust, 1974-75 and 1978-79; Councillor, Corporation of Cochin, 1969-79; presently Member, Committee on Private Members’ Bills and Resolutions.
