CHAUDHURI, SHRI TRIDIB, M.A. [R.S.P.—West Bengal, Berbampore, 1980]  s. of late Shri Ganesh Govinda; b. at Dacca, December 1911; ed. at K. N. Collegiate School, Berhampore, Nawab Bahadur’s Institution, Murshidabad, K. N. College, Berhampore and Calcutta University, passed the B.A. and M.A. examinations of the Calcutta University as a private student from jail; Unmarried; Journalist, Author and Political Worker; detained without trial as a suspected revolutionary and member of the under-ground Anushilan Samiti, 1931-37 and again during 1940-46; imprisoned by Portuguese authorities in Goa for 19 months from July 1955 to January 1957 for participating in the Liberation Satyagraha Movement against Portuguese colonialism; awarded a sentence of ten years and an additional two years; amnestied in January 1957; became a convinced Marxist-Leninist in jail during first detention; was Member, Congress and Congress Socialist Party (prior to May 1947); resigned from Congress Socialist Party on the issue of support to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose after Tripuri Congress Session in 1939; Founder Member and General Secretary, Revolutionary Socialist Party formed in 1940; Vice-President, United Trade Union Congress; Member, (i) First Lok Sabha, 1952-57, (ii) Second Lok Sabha, 1957-62, (iii) Third Lok Sabha, 1962-67, (iv) Fourth Lok Sabha, 1967-70, (v) Fifth Lok Sabha, 1971-77, and (vi) Sixth Lok Sabha, 1977-79; Leader, Revolutionary Socialist Party Group in Lot Sabha; unsuccessfully contested for Presidentship of the Republic of India in 1974 as the candidate set up by a number of Opposition Parties in Parliament.  

Social activities:  Takes active interest in labour, peasant and student movements; connected with several labour, bank and office employees’ Unions and their welfare organisations in West Bengal.

Favourite pastime and recreation:  Reading, collection of books and walking. 

Special interests:  Philosophy, Economics, Social History and Archaeology. 

Publications:  Contributions to various literary and political journals and periodicals in English, Hindi and Bengali; English works—”Left Right Left—A Critique of C.P.I.” (1948); “Swing Back” (1951); “Syndicate Vs. Indicate” (1970); Bengali works–“Nineteen Months in Salazar’s Prison”, “About R.S.P.”, “An Outline of Socialism”.
