KOLKATA: Actor-turned-politician Tapas Paul will be cremated on Wednesday in Kolkata. The former MP’s body was taken to Rabindra Sadan today morning where people from all walks of life paid homage to him. His body was brought from Mumbai on Tuesday evening.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had expressed grief over Paul’s demise. It was on her initiative that Paul had joined politics in 2001 and became a two-time MLA from Alipore. Later he represented Krishnagar parliamentary seat twice in 2009 and 2014.
The CM is expected to visit Rabindra Sadan to pay homage to the former superstar. Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit also expressed her condolences. The two had shared screen space together.
Paul in an interview to TOI had said that he was eager to return to cinema for he was not sure about politics. He had also lamented that it was a big miss for him as he never acted in any film with Uttam Kumar, who died soon after Paul joined the silver screen.
Saumitra Chatterjee and Rituparna Sengupta termed Paul’s demise a great loss to cinema.
Ujjwal Chatterjee who directed Paul starrer Swabhumi said that he was a good human being apart from being a good actor and a political personality. Kanak Bhattacharya, producer of Jatra, in whose productions Paul acted for nearly a decade said Bengal cinema and Jatra have lost a superhero.
