Kolkata: Telltale signs from the murder of 20-year-old BBA student Debanjan Das indicate contract killers might have been engaged to gun down the youth in his car at Birati on Nabami night.
The Barrackpore detective wing has started interrogating his girlfriend—whom he had dropped home before the incident—about an alleged dispute over a love triangle among Das, the Class-XII girl and her former boyfriend, whom cops have started looking for. “Inconstancies were found in the girl’s statements. She might be trying to suppress information,” a cop said.
“Only the windowpane beside the driver’s seat in Das’s car was down when his body was recovered. The shooter might have fired at him through the open window. But the bullet injuries on Das’s right elbow and the left side of his neck suggest the killer could have been with him in the car and shot him at a close range,” an officer said. Witnesses told police three youths on a bike were seen on the spot. “People from a pandal on School Bari Road ran to the car to find three youths on a bike standing nearby. But they fled before cops arrived,” a senior officer said.
From the girl’s call record, police suspect she was in contact with her former boyfriend as well. “A raid is on to nab some suspects. Some persons would be further interrogated,” said Ananda Roy, DCP, Zone II, Barrackpore commissionerate.
