KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the opposition for doing politics over Dengue and asked them to come together and fight together for the eradication and control over the serious disease. Though there has been 27 deaths due to dengue but the chief minister said that the state has been successful in curing a lot of people suffering from it.
The chief minister’s reaction comes after the opposition walked out of the assembly during the discussion on Dengue alleging that the ruling party didn’t allow any division on the issue and so there is utility in this discussion. “The opposition doesn’t have the patience to listen. They should stop doing politics over the issue and fight together for a common cause,” the chief minister said.
“We do not want anyone to die, and every death is a sad moment for us but we should not forget that over 44,852 people are affected, and 27 people have died due to dengue in West Bengal till now. We have to understand that the doctors were able to save many people from the disease. Credit must be given to the doctors,” the chief minister said.
The chief minister presented figures from 1997 to 2004 showing that a lot more people had died in Malaria during the Left Front rule. “We have saved a lot of people and if we were not serious about the issue then we could not have saved so many lives,” the chief minister said adding that dengue is a disease that can only be controlled through public awareness. Minister of state for health Chandrima Bhattacharya said that the state government is working all through the year to control dengue.
When asked why the opposition walked out of the house, leader of the opposition, Abdul Mannan said, “We wanted a discussion under Rule 185 where we would have power to vote and in this way we could register out protest but they did under Rule 194 which has no meaning”. Left Front leader Sujan Chakraborty said, “They are scared of any kind of discussion”.
