Cops have made special arrangements as the candidates will be travelling to various examination centres and not their schools. “The focus, yet again, will be on the Paikpara-Tallah-Shyambazar zone along with the Majerhat-New Alipore zone. We have announced the best possible route to reach the 17 examination centres located in the Tallah zone,” an officer said. “We are keeping our vehicles ready at all important crossings. If any student gets stuck, s/he can approach any of our uniformed personnel and we shall do everything to help,” said Subhankar Sinha Sarkar.
State transport minister Suvendu Adhikary said that the transport department will make every possible arrangement to ferry students and their parents safely to their destinations. He assured the members of the assembly after speaker Biman Banerjee said that some MLAs had complained of traffic congestion. The minister also said that government buses will pick up candidates and their parents even if there is no designated stoppage.
Police sources said that each of the 182 centres in Kolkata will be manned by four cops — one officer and three constables. Two women cops will be added to the teams that keep watch over centres where girl students write their exams.
Meanwhile, Lalbazar has directed sergeants to help out anyone in trouble. This could mean offering lifts or arranging alternate modes of transport. The Lalbazar traffic control room will monitor key zones. If required, cops will switch over to manual operation of traffic lights at vital zones,” an officer said.
Vehicles carrying students to and from the examination centres will be given priority. Helpline numbers — 1073, 033-22505096, 033-22143644 and 9836984814 — have been set up for students.
Truck movement between 8am and noon will remain suspended. Among the various suggestions on the table are turning key roads one way. For those crossing Majerhat, cops have made special arrangements around Durgapur Bridge and Chetla.
Cops also plan to give special badges to examinees so that they can be easily identified.
