KOLKATA: A middle-aged woman who had booked an app-based cab to Howrah Station from Park Circus on Monday afternoon was allegedly ass-aulted and pushed out of the vehicle by the driver and his friend when she refused to pay the extra amount that he dem-anded over and above the fare fixed by the cab aggregator.
The driver, Shahbaz, was arrested on Tuesday but his friend Wasim is absconding. The cab aggregator, which helped cops track down Shahbaz, has decided to cancel his contract and remove him from the platform. “What’s been described is deeply concerning. This is a clear violation of our community guidelines, and we have removed the driver partner’s access to the app. We stand ready to support law enf-orcement authorities in their investigations,” said a spokesperson of the app-cab service provider.
The complainant, a resident of Peyara Bagan in Garia, had travelled to Park Circus on work and had then booked a cab to Howrah Station. “It was around 12.40pm that I boarded the cab from the far corner of Shamsul Huda Road near Bengal Sweets. The driver, Shahbaz, asked for extra money. I refused saying that the money will be fixed through the app algorithm,” the woman said in her complaint.
Cabby, friend forced rider to cancel the ride
“As we continued to argue, another person, whom I later came to know was a friend of the driver called Wasim, hopped into the car. Together, the two of them first cancelled the ride and asked me to get off. When I insisted that he complete the trip, they threatened me with dire consequences and tried to forcefully push me out of the vehicle,” the woman said in her complaint at Karaya police station.
Police first traced the car’s owner from the details provided by service provider and the owner led then to the driver. “We arrested Shahbaz in a few hours. We lodged the case under IPC sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) and 506 (criminal intimidation),” said an investigating officer. The driver was produced in a city court and was granted bail.
DC (southeast) Ajay Prasad said a chargesheet would be filed soon to send across a message to cab drivers.
