Kolkata: Rs 5 lakh diamond ring recovered in 6-hour operation | Kolkata News

KOLKATA: A golden ring fitted with solitaire – bought several years back by a Dover Lane family as a gift from an elderly woman to her daughter-in-law – was stolen by a help during a family gathering on Sunday evening. In the next six hours, the Gariahat police almost worked from scratch to solve the case and recover the ring, which is valued more than Rs 5 lakh.
“It was around 7pm on Sunday when Anjali Mehra Saha, a resident of Dover Lane and owner of a saree shop at Gariahat, reported that her ring was missing from her residence. Primary examination revealed Saha was hosting a family get together at her Dover Lane residence on Sunday morning where several of her family members turned up. This included her father Surya Kanta Mehra (67). Further investigation revealed her father had brought over a few people to help out – including his help,” said DC (SED) Ajoy Prasad.
Police said the accused, Seema Sardar, was neither verified nor did they have any document about them. The only input the family could provide was a mobile number, which was not even used by her, but her husband. “The number was registered in the name of one Kartik Sardar, a resident of Joynagar.” said an officer.
Incidentally, a civic volunteer, who also is a resident of Joynagar, was asked to locate the family. But he did not find Kartick and his wife Seema. A source, however, reported that close to Joynagar there is an area called Mandirbazaar from where from lots of people come to Kolkata and work as help in different localities.
“Within 10pm, a police team reached the spot in search of Seema Soon, she was identified and nabbed. After initial denial, Seema identified a place in her room, where she kept the ring wrapped in a Rs 100 note,” said DC Prasad.
Cops said they have learnt there is a market in Mandirbazar area where purchases of stolen goods are made. Most of the items here are stolen ones, bought by helpers and servants from Kolkata. The police said Seema was looking for a buyer here and thought that if she waited for the morning, she would get a better deal,” said an investigating officer.
