KOLKATA: Burglars dressed as Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s water supply department employees overpowered an elderly woman inside her flat at a posh residential complex in Madurdaha off EM Bypass and decamped with cash and jewellery worth several lakhs on Monday afternoon.
Police said, Meenakshi Sarkar (72) was alone at her 3rd floor apartment at Deeshari Abasan in Madurdaha around 1.30pm when two men dressed in KMC jackets and wearing identity cards, approached the apartment’s security guards who checked with Sarkar before allowing them entry into the apartment and showed the way to her flat.
Sarkar lives at the flat with her husband, Satya Bikash, who was not at home at that time. As Sarkar opened the door, the men asked her to get a glass of water to test its quality and while she turned her back the men attacked her.
“The men pushed her on the bed and covered her face with a pillow cover. They then brought a knife from the kitchen and threatened to slash her throat while they asked her to hand over almirah keys. The woman gave in to their demands and men looted some gold and imitation jewellery from the almirah and Rs 6000 in cash,” said an officer of Kolkata Police.
The cops suspect some insider’s hand in the robbery as they apparently knew that there was a trouble with the drinking water supply at the flat and also the exact gate which KMC workers use to enter the complex.
“We have CCTV grabs of the two suspects and are probing into the case,” said the officer.
