KOLKATA: The Barrackpore detective wing on Sunday claimed to have cracked the mystery behind the murder of Dum Dum BBA student Debanjan Das following the arrest of the prime accused, Prince Singh who reportedly confessed to committing the crime. Police suspect that the love triangle could have led to the murder.
According to the police sources, Singh admitted during the interrogation that he had fired twice at Das when the victim was driving his car to return home on Nabami night.
“Singh had taken a two-wheeler from his friend, Vishal Maru, who was already arrested in connection with the murder, and followed Das’s car to shoot at him. He had taken the firearm from another friend in Birati. We are looking for him and Singh’s statements are also being verified,” said a senior police officer of the Barrackpore commissionerate. Police said Singh, a college dropout and youngest son of a Dum Dum-based promoter, had been in a relationship with the Class-XII girl for over three years. However, the girl had developed another relationship with Das barely four months ago. “Das’s affair with his former girlfriend enraged Singh and as a result, he plotted to kill him and take revenge. But the girl was suspected to be continuing with both the relationships. So, Singh wanted to wipe out Das,” an investigating officer said.
Singh has been booked under sections IPC 302/120B IPC and remanded in police custody for 11 days after being produced in a Barrackpore court.
“We will reconstruct the murder scene soon with the accused. We will interrogate the two arrested,” said Manoj Kr. Verma, police commissioner, Barrackpore.
