KOLKATA: The state PWD on Thursday sent KMC a miniature model, based on which the Tallah Bridge can possibly be reconstructed. The department also asked the civic body to identify underground utility cables, especially water supply main pipelines that the KMC may need to shift before construction begins.
KMC water supply and civil engineering department officials held a series of meetings, discussing the model sent by the state department. “This is just a preliminary model. We need to study the model carefully and then give our opinion about it,” the civic official said. KMC sources said on Thursday that there was a debate going on whether the new bridge would be cable-stayed or a bow-string one. “Though some PWD officials want to rebuild Tallah Bridge as a cable-stayed structure, RITES wants to make it a bow-string one. We need to solve the dispute before giving our NOC for the demolitionof the existing bridge and its reconstruction,” a KMC water supply department official said.
According to a civic water supply department official, the KMC was also concerned about five major water pipe lines that ran under the Tallah Bridge service road. These five pipes form the backbone of the city’s supply, transporting potable water to the entire north and central Kolkata and several neighbourhoods in the south. The official said they needed to protect the pipes (72-inch diameter, 54-inch diameter, 45-inch diameter, and two other 30-inch diameter) at all costs. “We always keep a special watch on them. If even a minor breach is reported, we repair it on a war footing,” a KMC water supply department official said.
Civic engineers decided that they would take up the matter with the state PWD, RITES and the utility agencies before giving a green signal to the state for the reconstruction of the bridge and shifting of the underground water pipes.
