Chhattisgarh Maoist with Rs 5 lakh bounty on head surrenders in Malkangiri | Bhubaneswar News

KORAPUT: A wanted Maoist from Chhattisgarh, carrying a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head declared by the Odisha government, surrendered before DIG (south-western range) Shafeen Ahamed K in Malkangiri district on Tuesday.
The surrendered rebel has been identified as Kamlu Beti of Kamka village in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district. Police said Kamlu was the secretary of Darva division’s Kangerghati area of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee of the CPI (Maoist).
“Being motivated by the regional identity, I joined the Maoist outfit. I became a victim instead. The Maoists have lost their ideology. Most of them kill innocent people on the suspicion of being police informers. I decided to return to the mainstream,” Kamlu said. “The establishment of security camps at Mahupadar, Temurpali and Karnatpalli near Tulsi reserve forest bordering Chhattisgarh has made our lives miserable,” he added.
“Police have intensified combing operations in the region. As a result, we have to keep shifting places daily to escape the security forces,” Kamlu said.
Police said Kamlu was on their wanted list for his alleged involvement in at least eight Maoist offensives, including murder and exchange of fire. “He will be rehabilitated as per the surrender policy of the state government,” police added.
The DIG said the Maoists were becoming frustrated owing to extensive combing operations. “They are targeting innocent tribal people, especially in the Swabhiman area, to instil a sense of fear. We will increase our security measures to the villagers keep safe and bring development in the area,” he added.
DIG further said, “The Maoist movement in the region is mostly led by Telegu-speaking Red leaders like R K, Udaya, Krishna, Chalapati and Aruna and the cadres are mostly from Chhattisgarh and Odisha.” “As most Maoists leaders are from Andhra Pradesh, they don’t have a sense of belonging and target the innocent tribals of Malkangiri for their own benefits,” he added.
The DIG has appealed to the Maoists to surrender and lead a dignified life.
