Women from north Indian states who reside in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are all set to celebrate Karva Chauth on Thursday. However, Odia women don’t celebrate it, as it’s not a part of the state’s culture. Most of them celebrate Savitri vrat during Raja festival. And as the cities have a good number of north Indian families, the excitement among the womenfolk is palpable.

According to members of the community, Karva Chauth involves certain rituals and observing a fast. More importantly, the women dress up in the best and worship the moon. They observe a fast till they see the moon. The fasting is done to seek a long life for their husbands. It’s also believed that the festival strengthens the bond between couples.
As the festive season is on, it’s easy for these women to buy stuff, as city markets have a lot to offer during this time. Shopkeepers also put up Karva Chauth products on sale. No wonder, most markets in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack are buzzing with activity. Women buying cosmetics, accessories and traditional apparel for the occasion. Bangles and henna are also in huge demand.
Sakshi Sharma, a businesswoman from Cuttack, said, “We have been preparing for the festival for the past few days. Shopping is most important since we have to buy every single thing for this festival, and it adds to the festive spirit. We have been staying here in Cuttack for over two decades now, but have never stopped celebrating Karva Chauth. There are several families in the area who will join us in the celebration.”
