Father among four held for ‘selling’ infant | Bhubaneswar News timesofindia.indiatimes.com

Bhubaneswar: A day after allegation of child sale surfaced in Bhubaneswar, the Khandagiri police arrested four persons, including the 19-day baby boy’s father, on Friday. The accused were identified as Dilu Das, 32, the baby’s father, and his acquaintances Prasant Kumar Gochhayat, 34, Manas Ranjan Mohapatra, 33, and Padua Das, 65.
Police said the reason behind the alleged child sale was poverty of the parents, who are daily-wage labourers. Dilu and his wife have five children. The infant, they allegedly sold, was their fifth child. The couple had sold their baby to Manas of Mancheswar for a few thousand rupees. Prasant and Padua helped the couple in selling the kid, a police officer said. On Thursday, the Childline volunteers came to know about the child sale and rescued the baby from Manas’ custody. The child welfare committee lodged a complaint with Khandagiri police, seeking action against those responsible. Incidents of child sale had come to the light in the capital city in the past as well. In December 2017, the child welfare committee here had rescued a 3-month-old boy from a house in Salia Sahi slum following allegation that the kid’s mother sold him for money to a couple. The Kharavel Nagar police here in July 2014 had arrested a couple for allegedly selling their three children in different places in the state. tnn
