Lawyers to attend regular court hearings from today | Bhubaneswar News

Sambalpur: The Central Action Committee (CAC) of all western Odisha bar associations on Sunday announced that the lawyers would participate in regular case hearings in courts across the region from Monday.
The lawyers, under the aegis of the CAC, have been agitating since September 5, 2018 to step up the demand for the establishment of a high court bench in western Odisha. Though they had been participating in all court works, they were abstaining from regular case hearings since March last year.
The CAC decision to restore normalcy in courts followed after after a meeting held on the premises of the Sambalpur Bar Association here on Sunday.
Addressing the media after the meeting, senior CAC member Sureswar Mishra said, “The CAC appeared in Supreme Court on February 17. Its secretary filed an affidavit giving details regarding the genesis of the movement for the establishment of a high court bench in western Odisha before the Supreme Court. The SC has accepted the affidavit and enlisted it for hearing. The next hearing over the issue has been scheduled on March 23.”
He further said in accordance with the direction of the Supreme Court, the CAC decided that lawyers across the region would participate in the regular hearing of cases in the courts.
The CAC has also issued an ultimatum to the state government. “If the state government does send a comprehensive proposal to the Centre regarding the establishment of an HC bench in western Odisha by March 31, the lawyers will intensify the agitation,” CAC convener Ashok Dash said.
The agitation for the establishment of a high court bench dates back to more than five decades. The lawyers had started the ‘no court, no hearing agitation’ on September 5, 2018. The state bar council had also recommended to the Bar Council of India (BCI) to take disciplinary action against the agitating bar associations of western Odisha.
