Odisha: ‘Drunk’ teacher suspended for molesting schoolgirl | Bhubaneswar News timesofindia.indiatimes.com

KENDRAPADA: A ‘drunk’ teacher of an upper primary school in Kendrapada district was suspended on Saturday for allegedly molesting a 12-year-old girl student in the school.
The girl’s father lodged a complaint against the teacher, Sarojkanta Barik, before the headmaster of the school and stated that the teacher in an inebriated condition on Friday molested the girl in the school after calling her to a separate room. The girl studies in Class VI.
“We investigated the matter in the school and came to know that the drunk teacher molested the girl. So he was suspended. However, the parents of the girl chose not to lodge an FIR against the teacher in the police station,” said Ajaya Parida, block education officer, Mahakalapada.
The mother of the girl told TOI that she was reluctant to go to school. “When I asked her why, she said the teacher took her to a separate room where he molested her. I could not believe that a teacher could do this,” she said.
When contacted, Rajiv Lochan Panda, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Kendrapada, said the girl or her parents need to lodge an FIR in the police station against the accused teacher and police cannot take suo motu action against the teacher.
“In many cases, survivors stay silent due to stigma attached to rape and the lengthy legal process,” said Subas Das, a lawyer of Kendrapada.
(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
