BERHAMPUR: What can be more heart-warming when a kid donates all her savings to a man because he embarks on a mission to promote a noble cause. More so when she is in Class IV.
The nine-year-old girl donated Rs 12,151, which she had saved while in Class I in a piggy bank, to the man, who launched a cycle expedition on Saturday. The 37-year-old man from Silk City, Damodar Achary, aims to create awareness on protection of environment and Swachh Bharat.
The girl, Sudipti Pradhan, a student of a private school here, flagged off the journey of Achary, who aims to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi after culminating his expedition next month.
The girl earlier did not know about Achary. When she came to know about his aim from her parents, she decided to donate her savings. “My parents told me to donate for the noble cause,” she said.
Protection of environment is need of the hour which she learnt from her schoolteacher. “That’s why I have extended support to him,” she added.
Bibhuti Jena, BJP’s Ganjam district president, who came to flag off the tour, handed over the flag to the girl after knowing about her monetary support.
“I wish him success and have donated what I had saved from the pocket money my parents gave me,” she said.
Achary, who is working as a driver at MKCG Medical College here, said he has aimed to end his expedition in 25 days by covering around 2,300 km. During his tour, he would pass through the major towns of Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and New Delhi.
During his tour, he would meet school and college students and ask them to plant more trees and protect the environment. “Denudation of forest cover and wanton tree felling will lead to disastrous conditions. In order to protect environment, more number of trees need to be planted,” he said. Apart from this, promoting Swachh Bharat is his another goal. “I will create awareness on bad effects of open defecation and urge people to use toilets,” said Achary before he started his journey. Several of his well-wishers and BJP district president Bibhuti Jena were present on the occasion.
Achary, a father of two, had first cycled from Berhampur to Tirupati in 2003 to create awareness on AIDS. In 2012, he toured 20 out of 30 districts in the state and covered around 900 km to create awareness on environment protection.
While 20% of his expenditure on the tour was donated by his well wishers, other expenses will be borne by himself.
