Berhampur: A food processing unit will soon start functioning from the Berhampur circle jail. The construction of the Rs 1.03 crore building is nearing completion.
The unit will be operated by the jail inmates and they will get incentives for this, director general of police (prisons), Santosh Kumar Upadhyay, told the media here on Thursday. He inaugurated a 30-bed hospital building inside the circle jail.
At present, a weaving unit, tin trunk-making unit and a printing press are operating inside the circle jail and the inmates are working in the units. The incentives, which they earn by working in different units of the jail, will help maintaining their families outside the jail, he said.
Now the hospital is functioning in a ward with 10 beds in the jail while outdoor is functioning separately.
Of 30 beds in the proposed hospital, 10 are earmarked for women, he said.
Though two doctor posts, including that of a psychiatrist and a medicine specialist, have been sanctioned for the new hospital, it would initially run by the existing doctor. There are two other staffers — a male nursing orderly and an attendant. The hospital will cater to the needs of about 800 inmates in the jail.
At present, around 150 inmates visit the outdoor. Besides, serious patients are also treated in the hospital as the circle jail has declared it as a referral jail, an official source said.
“We are giving much stress on health of inmates and hygienic condition in the jails across the state,” he said. In the circle jail, he said, there is a need to maintain cleanliness of toilets. He also said the old buildings of the circle jail need repair.
The top police officer said sophisticated devices will be procured from abroad to monitor use of the mobile phones by the inmates from inside the jail.
