National snooker player Anuj Uppal was in town recently to inaugurate a garment store at a mall on the city outskirts. The snooker and billiards player, who had represented India in the Asian 8Ball Pool Championship in 2002, was awestruck by the beauty of the temple city. It was his first visit to Bhubaneswar. He hailed the city for its green landscape, low traffic and calm and hospitable people.

“I have visited several places in the country and outside. But this city is very calm and beautiful. I also tasted the food here and it was great. I would love to come back,” said the player, who started playing seriously in 2000 and has been actively participating in tournaments.
Talking about the sport, he said it’s mostly confined to metros and not very popular like other sports. “This sport needs to be broadcast live like other sports. Earlier cricket was only popular, but slowly, other sports are gaining popularity owing to extensive media coverage. Despite legends like Geet Sethi and Pankah Advani ruling on the world stage, this game has not reached the masses. With government support and proactive steps by sport administrators, it can reach out to more people and create more players,” said Uppal, while stressing the need for proper infrastructures in places like Odisha.
