Agriculture Department aiming to double Moong cultivation area in

JALANDHAR: The Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department has set its eyes to double the area of moong cultivation in the district under Mission Tandarust Punjab which will not only promote the diversification but will also increase their revenues. 

The district has around 400-hectares area under moong cultivation. 

Divulging the details  Chief Agriculture Officer Dr Nazar Singh said that the department has already distributed 450 kits of Moong in the district free of cost.

He said that moong cultivation will help to save the receding water table as the moong crop needs just two irrigations. 

Dr Singh told that the moong can be sown immediately after the harvesting of potatoes which is already initiated and will be over by March 15.

He said that the moong is just 60-day crop and the farmers can earn more revenues from this crop. 

The Chief Agriculture Officer further revealed that moong boosts the fertility of the soil and reduce the need of the other fertilizers because they get nitrogen from the atmosphere and provide organic matter to the soil hence will reduce cultivation cost.

He said that the department is already holding awareness and training camps for farmers in this regard in the district and also providing moong kits free of cost. 

Dr Singh also said that the department is also holding demonstrations of the use of the latest techniques for sowing making at farmers’ fields.

 

He added that the encouraging response has been witnessed as more and more farmers were opting for diversification of agriculture, which was not only good for them but for the state also. 

 

 Dr Singh said that the diversification of agriculture is a boon for farmers in today’s scenario and it can maximize the profits of farmers even from small landholdings.
