Underline need for refraining from practice of paddy straw burning

Presides over district level camp for paddy straw management

 JALANDHAR: Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma today urged the farmers of the district to protect the nature by not burning the paddy straw for saving future generations from the devastating effects of environmental pollution.

Addressing the gathering here today during a District level camp for paddy straw management here at the village Budhiana, the Deputy Commissioner underlined the intrinsic bond between nature and mankind adding that environmental pollution needs to checked for ensuring that the future generations do not suffer from deadly diseases due to it. He appealed all the farmers to preserve by refraining from the practice of the Paddy straw burning. Sharma said that we all must refrain from converting our district into ‘toxic gas chamber’ by burning paddy straw.

 

The Deputy Commissioner said that farmers should desist from burning the paddy straw as it was a hazardous activity which was having castigating effect over the environment and human health. He said that all of us should be sensitive for saving our environment so that our coming generations could live in healthy and clean air. Mr. Sharma said that besides causing considerable damage to human life the burning of paddy straw was also fatal for soil health due to which farmers must avoid this unhealthy practice.

The Deputy Commissioner said that to save the environment, the state government has decided to give Rs 2,500 per acre as compensation to those small and marginal farmers, who have refrained from burning paddy straw. He said that every application has to be verified by village panchayat and then by Revenue authorities to ensure that only the non-basmati cultivating farming families, who have not burnt any part of the field, get compensation.

On the occasion, Chief Agriculture Officer Dr Nazar Singh, Agriculture Officers Dr Naresh Gulati, Dr Kuldeep Singh Saini, Dr Baljinder Bhullar, Assistant Agricultural Engineer Navdeep Singh and others were also present.
