Book and arrest MLA along with supporters for trying to organize a social gathering in violation of mandatory lockdown restrictions
JALANDHAR: The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police today booked and arrested MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira for endangering the public safety of the citizens of the State during lockdown in wake of Covid 19 pandemic by violating the provisions of the Disaster Management Act and Epidemics Act.
Divulging the details, the Deputy Commissioner of Police Gurmeet Singh said that the MLA, in violation with the lockdown norms, had given call for a candlelight march from Desh Bhagat Yadgar hall. However, he said that the call was violation of the stipulated norms issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs which debars any social/ religious and political gatherings. Gurmeet Singh said that the MLA or any other organizer had neither applied for any permission nor they were allowed to hold such gathering due to Corona Virus pandemic.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police said that the district Police and Civil Administration led by him and the Sub Divisional Magistrate Dr. Jai Inder Singh had cautioned the MLA not to mobilize a gathering of people for his proposed protest at Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall. However, he said that in a highly irresponsible and condemnable act, the MLA willfully and deliberately chose to violate the mandatory lockdown restrictions laid down by the Union government after which he along with his other supporters was arrested by the Police. Gurmeet Singh said that a FIR number 60 under section 188 IPC, 51 Disaster management act and 3(2) Epidemic Disease Act have been registered at Police Division Number 4 against 30 persons including MLA for violation of lockdown norms and organizing candle march without prior permission.
