Who were 40 Muktas in whose memory of Maghi Mela in Muktsar is held

After the long struggle against the Mughals in December 1704, Guru Gobind Singh had to leave Anandpur sahib and at this time, 40 Sikhs under the command of Bhai Mahan Singh gave the guru a “Bedava” meaning disclaimer that they were no longer his Sikhs nor was he their guru.

But when they returned home, Mata Bhago and their wives admonished them and realizing their mistake, they returned to seek the forgiveness of the Guru Gobind Singh and encountered with Mughal forces near Khidrana Di Dhab. They sacrificed their lives in that fierce battle and mortally wounded, Bhai Mahan Singh, on being asked his last wish by the guru, implored him to tear that Bedava(disclaimer written to him earlier) which he

The Guru torn down immediately. These 40 Sikhs were bestowed the title of 40 Mukta, meaning who attained salvation at Khidrana Di Dhab, and the place blessed with the name of Muktsar.
