Thevar, Shri Pasumpon U. Muthuramalinga: Forward Block (Madras-Aruppukottai); B. 30 October 1908; Elected to the Madras Legislative Assembly in 1937, 1946, 1952 and 1957; Elected to the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Lok Sabha; associated himself with the freedom movement at the young age of nineteen; under the influence of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, organized the Forward Bloc in Tamilnadu & became the President of its State Unit in 1948 & Vice-President of the Party in 1955; died 30 October, 1963 at Madurai.
Other Information: Established the “Agriculturist Association” to mitigate the plight and the sufferings of the peasants. Fought to abolish the Zamindari System. Well known labour leader and fought for the rights of labourers.
A devout follower of Gandhiji, worked for Gandhian ideals of using Khadi and promoted prohibition and removal of untouchability. Led the historic entry of Harijans into the Meenakshi Temple, Madurai. Devoted his entire life for the uplift of the downtrodden, including peasants, industrial workers and other backward sections of society. Spent 4000 days in prison during the Freedom Struggle.
