Rubab, November 26, 1945; 1 d.; Social Worker; left studies in 1930 to join Satyagraha; imprisoned thrice, during 1930, 1932 and 1943; President, Mandvi Congress Committee, 1942; Vice-President, Bombay Pradesh Congress Committee since 1970; Member, Bombay Provincial Congress Committee; elected to the Bombay Municipal Corporation for three terms, 1939-48, 1948-52 and 1954-57; Chairman, (i) Schools Committee, 1945-46 and (ii) Standing Committee, 1949-50; elected as Leader of the Congress Municipal Party, 1954; elected Mayor of Bombay, 1956-57; instrumental in starting a permanent “Mayor’s Fund” for helping sufferers of natural calamities all over India; elected to Bombay Legislative Assembly, 1952 and 1957; elected to Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, 1962; Chief Whip of the Congress Party in State Legislature, 1960-62; Minister of Prohibition and Wakf, Maharashtra, 1962; resigned under “Party before Power” scheme; visited Saudi Arabia as a Member of the “Fact Finding Commission” concerning facilities for Hajis; Indian Delegate to the Anti-Atomic and Hydrogen Bomb Conference at Tokyo and Hiroshima, 1964; led Indian Delegation at a Symposium held by the United Nations on Racial Discrimination at Younde, Cameroun, Africa, 1971.
