Assam-Cachar—1971, Daughter of late Shri Mahesh Chandra Datta; b. at Silchar, March 28, 1904; ed. at Mission Girls’ High School, Silchar and Diocesan College, Calcutta; m. Shri Arun Kumar Chanda, 1927, Widow; 2 s. and 2 d.; House-wife and Social Worker; was appointed Jail Visitor of the District Jail in 1931-32 being the first woman Jail Visitor in Assam; was Chairman, (i) Silchar School Board, (ii) Silchar District Social Welfare Advisory Board, (iii) N.E.F. Railway Employees Union (iv) Tea Employees’ Union; was elected first President of the Bengali Speaking People’s Association of Assam, in 1960; was Member of (i) Silchar Municipal Board, (ii) Gauhati University Court, (iii) Assam State Text Book Committee, (iv) Assam State Advisory Board for Social Education, (v) Assam State Advisory Board for Women’s Education; M.L.A., Assam, 1957-61; resigned in 1961 as a protest against police firing at Silchar on Satyagrahis on May 9, 1961; Member, (i) Third Lok Sabha, 1962-67 and (ii) Fourth Lok Sabha, 1967-70.
