Gaggu Bahan Makwana, 1943; 4 s. and 3 d.; Political and Social Worker; previously associated with Praja Socialist Party, 1948-69; Actively participated in the ‘Quit India’ movement of 1942; Also participated in the movement for the liberation of Goa, Daman and Diu in 1955 and the non-cooperation movement of agricultural labourers of Pardi in 1953; underwent imprisonment for joining the Maha Gujarat movement, 1956-57; was imprisoned again for participating in the Central Government Employees Agitation in 1960 and non-cooperation movement in connection with the Maha Gujarat Martyrs’ Memorial in 1956; Cabinet Minister for Panchayat, Cooperation and Cottage Industries, Government of Gujarat, 1978; Member, Central Executive Committee of Textile Labour Association, Ahmedabnd for three years; Councillor, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, for two terms, 1965-74; Leader, Congress Party in the Corporation; Member, Standing Committee, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation; Member, (i) Gujarat Legislative Assembly, 1972-74 and 1975-80, (ii) Estimates Committee of Gujarat Legislative Assembly and (iii) Seventh Lok Sabha, 1980-84; Member, Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, 1985-86.
Social activities: Participation in trade union movement, attending to Harijan problems, including their education.
