Nagarathnamma, 1935; 1 s. and 3d.; Agriculturist; left studies and joined freedom movement, 1931; imprisoned several times during the freedom struggle; Secretary, Andhra Provincial Congress for 10 years; President, (i) Andhra Pradesh Congress, 1951 and (ii) Indian National Congress, 1959—62; Presided over three sessions of the Congress; Members Madras Legislative Assembly, 1946 and Constituent Assembly of India, 1947; Minister of Prohibition, Housing and Forests, Madras, 1949—51; Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra and Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, 1953; Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, 1956 and 1962—64; voluntarily resigned Andhra Pradesh Chief Ministership in February, 1964 following a Supreme Court verdict in a case, in order to establish high standards in public life, but was re-elected as Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, Andhra Pradesh; Member, Rajya Sabha, 1952 (resigned in 1953) and 1964—67; Minister of Steel and Mines, Government of India June, 1964—January, 1966; Minister of Transport, Aviation and Shipping and Tourism, January, 1966—March, 1967; Member, Fourth Lok Sabha, 1967—70 and its Speaker, 1967—69; Member, Sixth Lok Sabha, March 25—July 21, 1977; Speaker, Sixth Lok Sabha, March 26—July 13, 1977; Assumed Office of President of India on July 25, 1977.
