  • Mathematical Methods

Vector algebra and vector calculus; linear vector spaces, linear operators, matrices and eigenvalue problem; Sturm–Liouville theory, classical orthogonal polynomials; linear ordinary differential equations, exact and series methods of solution; linear partial differential equations, solution by separation of variables; complex variables, analytic functions, Taylor and Laurent expansions,  contour integration; Fourier and Laplace transforms. 

  • Classical Mechanics

Newton’s laws, conservation of energy and momentum, collisions; generalized coordinates, principle of least action, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of mechanics; symmetry and conservation laws; central force problem, Kepler problem; rigid body motion; small oscillations and normal modes;  special relativity in classical mechanics.

  • Electromagnetic Theory

  • Quantum Mechanics

The uncertainty principle; conceptual basis of quantum mechanics; Schrodinger equation, problems in  one, two and three dimensions, bound states and tunneling, particle in a box, harmonic oscillator,  hydrogen atom; matrix formulation of quantum theory, unitary transformations and Hermitean operators  and their properties; orbital and spin angular momenta, addition of angular momenta; time independent  and time dependent perturbation theory, Fermi golden rule; elementary scattering theory

  • Solid State Physics

  • Electronics

  • Nuclear and Particle Physics

  • Atomic and Optical Physics

Interference, diffraction and polarization of light; photoelectric effect; spectra of single and multiple  electron atoms; Zeeman and Stark effects; electric dipole transition and selection rules; hyperfine  structure; spontaneous and stimulated emission.

  • Experimental data and error analysis

Frequently Asked Questions

 1.What are the disciplines on which JEST examination is conducted?

  • You can appear for the JEST examination in Physics or Theoretical Computer Science but not for both.

2. Are there different tests for admission in Integrated Ph. D & Ph. D. programmes?

  • No. A common examination is conducted both for Ph. D. and integrated Ph. D. programmes.

3. Is there any limit to the number of times one can apply for JEST examination?

  • No, there is no such restriction on the number of times one can appear for the JEST examination.

4. Is there any age limit for taking JEST examination?

  • There is no restriction on age for appearing in JEST examination. However, each participating institute has its own eligibility criteria. For details on the eligibility criteria of the participating institutes candidates are advised to visit their websites.

5. Is application fee of JEST examination refundable?

  • An application fee of Rs 300 (Rs 150 for SC/ST applicants) is required to be paid along with the application which can be paid online using debit card/credit card/Net-banking. Payment by any other mode will not be accepted. The application fee once paid will NOT be refunded.

6. How to obtain the admit card?

  • Admit card will be available in JEST webpage and it can be downloaded after the  announced date. Admit cards will NOT be sent by post/email. Bring a print-out of the downloaded Admit Card and one of your photo-ids to the examination center.

 7. What is the level of questions in the examination ?

  • The questions are based on the general syllabii of graduation and post-graduation level courses offered by various Indian universities and institutions. JEST question papers are normally not made available.

8. Which institutes offer a Ph.D. Degree in Theoretical Computer Science ?

  • Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai is the only institution which currently offers a Ph. D. in Theoretical Computer Science. Please visit their webpage for more information.

9. Which institutes offer a Ph.D. Degree in Neuroscience ?

  • National Brain Research Centre (NBRC), Gurgaon is the only institution which currently offers a Ph. D. in Neuroscience. Please visit their webpage for more information.

11. To apply do I need to have an email-id?

  • Candidates must have a valid email-id prior to registering themselves with JEST.

12. What are these email-id and password required for?

  • The email-id (used as your user-id) and password (whatever you wish) are required to create an account with the JEST website for submitting the ON-LINE application form.

13. Is registration necessary? How does it work?

  • Yes. Registration is a process in which your email-id and preferred password are saved in a database. On successful registration, an email will be sent to your registered email-id with a confirmation link for verification. You need to click on this link to complete the registration process. After confirming your account, use the Apply link to submit your application.

14. Is it possible to fill-up the form in fragments/parts since it is a long one?

  • Yes. It is possible to fill up the form in fragments. Even one can save the form after filling the mandatory fields in the first page and enter other data in the next login. However, it is advised to do it in one go whenever one is ready with all the details.

15. Is there a provision to modify a previously saved form?

  • Modification is possible provided the final submission of the ON-LINE application form has not been made. Once the application form is submitted by clicking the “Submit Application” button, no further modification will be allowed.

16. Is it possible to make payment of the application fee after submitting the application?

  • One can submit the application and pay the examination fee later by clicking the link Fee Payment which is listed under the Application Status. Note that it is only after successful e-payment of application fee your application submission process will be considered complete.

17. How to make the payment of the application fee?

  • Fee payment can be made online by clicking the link Fee Payment which will open a page with title “Shopping Cart” and “Check out” button. To proceed for payment, press this “Check out” button and follow the instructions as they appear. If shopping cart shows “There are no products in your shopping cart”, it may be because of two reasons (a) You have not completed application by clicking “Submit Application” or (b) Empty shopping cart will be shown even if you have completed application and payment both, in that situation please check My Account for completed order.

18. My shopping cart is showing “Empty” even after submission of the Application form. What should I do ?

  • One of the fee option must be selected for the application fee payment while filling the application form.
  • Try paying with different web browser/ differen machine. Older version of Internet Explorer has some issues reported. While reporting errors, please tell us the name and the version of browser you are using.
  • Also ensure that cookies are disabled in your browser.

19. My Credit/Debit card is not working while paying the application fee. What should I do?

  • Only Master and Visa cards are acceptable for fee payment by Credit/Debit card. If you do not have one, then take help of friends/relatives who have these cards.

20. What is the validity period of JEST score?

  • JEST score is valid for only one year.

About Joint Entrance Screening Test 2014

  1. Applicants seeking admission  for a Ph.D / Integrated Ph.D Programme in Physics or Theoretical Computer Science or Neuroscience in  one  of the Participating Institutes may appear for the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) at one of the Exam Centers .
  2. Participating Institutes have their own eligibility criteria. Applicants who are expected to complete their final examinations by August of each year are also eligible to appear for the JEST exam of that year.
  3. Applicants must pay an application fee and register to appear for the exam.

JEST 2014 Application Procedure

  • Applications for  JEST- 2014 can be submitted ON-LINE ONLY.
  • Last date of  ON-LINE submission of applications is December 10, 2013.
  • Before filling the ON-LINE application form, candidate is requested to read the following instructions carefully.

ON-LINE Application

To apply online, applicants must create an account using a valid email-id. This account will remain valid from the time of account creation till one month after the date of declaration of results, for that year. Email-ids are linked to the created account as well as  to the application, and will be used for all communications with the applicants. Therefore, the email-id should be active and must not be changed during this period. To submit application online,  applicants must login to the created account and complete the application form. After submission, an unique submission number will be sent to your email-id. Please save all the emails sent to you and the unique submission number must be quoted by the applicant for any communication with the JEST authority.

The steps for submission of ON-LINE application form are

  1. Register yourself before you login. It is assumed that you already have an email-id.
  2. To register, the candidate has to click on the “register to appear for the exam” link in the Homepage. You will receive an email with  your account information after registering with a valid email-id. Follow the instructions given in the email for resetting your password and further login.
  3. Login to the JEST homepage with your username (your email-id) and password. Fill the form and save it, or, modify an already saved form.  Press the “Submit Application” button ONLY when you have inserted and checked all the mandatory entries.
  4. Upload jpg files of your Passport size photo and scanned signature.
  5. Pay the application fee online (Using Debit/Credit cards/Net-Banking).
  6. After ON-LINE submission of the application form and successful e-payment of the application fee, your submission procedure will be considered complete. NO modification will be allowed after this.

E-Photo and E-Signature

Photo – Signature

  •  While filling up the form, you will be asked to upload jpeg files of your passport size photograph and your signature. The size of the individual files should not exceed 100 Kilo bytes. Crop out the extra white portion from the background surrounding the image to retain clarity.
  • Before uploading your photo and signature files, make sure you have given it a good name. File names should use  alphabets, underscores, and numbers only.  Special characters such as spaces,  (, #, &,  punctuation, etc., should not be used in filenames.  If you use a logical naming system, like loginname_date_photo.jpg, loginname_date_sig.jpg then it will be printed without any errors.
  • In case the jpeg file of your photo which has been taken with camera exceeds the limit, you should compress the file size .
  • Your signature can be scanned with a digital scanner, and saved as jpeg file for uploading. In case this file size produced by scanner also exceeds 100 kB limit, you can compress it using the same tools as explained above.
  • Please make sure the image type is jpeg. For checking, right click and go to the properties of the file being uploaded.
  • Dimension of the image files should be the following
    • Minimum of 100 X 125 pixels or maximum of 240 x 300 pixels (width x height) for photo and 150 x 30 pixels (width x height) for signature
  • Please check ALL the properties of these image files before uploading.

Application Fee

An Application Fee of Rs. 300 (Rs 150 for SC/ST applicants) is required to be paid along with the application which can be paid online using Debit/Credit cards and Net-banking. Payment by any other mode will NOT be accepted.

 

Post-Submission of Application form

  • On successful submission of ON-LINE application form you will receive an E-mail with following information from JEST Website.
  •  Application data after final submission containing  Unique Submission Number and filled in data.
  • Please save this e-mail for further correspondence with the JEST authority.
  • If you do not receive the above-mentioned e-mail after submission of application form and the successful e-payment of the application fee, contact JEST authority.
  • Admit card will be available in the JEST webpage after 25th of January, 2014. Bring a printout of the downloaded admit card and one of your photo-ids for entry into the examination centre. Admit cards will NOT be sent by post/email.

Ph.D. Programme
Physics:

  • M.Sc. in Physics or M.Sc. / M.E. / M.Tech. in related disciplines.
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics / Applied Physics / Applied Mathematics / Optics and Photonics / Instrumentation / Electronics will also be considered at IIA.
  • B.E. or B.Tech. will also be considered at IISc, IMSc, ICTS-TIFR, IUCAA, JNCASR, NCRA-TIFR, TIFR-TCIS, RRI, IISER Mohali, IISER Pune, IISER Thiruvananthapuram and SNBNCBS.
  • Talented final year B.Sc. and first year M.Sc. in Physics / Electronics / Astronomy / Applied Mathematics students may also apply to be pre-selected for research scholarship at IUCAA.
  • MSc  in Physics, Engineering Physics or Applied Physics will also be considered at IPR. At TIFR, only B.Tech Eng. Phys. and M.Sc. Physics are eligible.

Theoretical Computer Science/Neuroscience:

  • M.Sc./ M.E. / M.Tech. / M.C.A. in Computer Science and related disciplines, and should be interested in the mathematical aspects of computer science. Integrated M.Sc. / M.Tech – Ph.D Programme 

  • At HRI, IISER-Pune, ICTS-TIFR, SNBNCBS, NCRA-TIFR, and TIFR-TCIS candidates with a Bachelor’s degree will also be considered for the integrated M.Sc., Ph.D. programme in Physics.
  • At IMSc, graduates with Bachelor’s degree in science/ mathematics/ /statistics /computer science/information technology/Engineering will also be considered for admission in Physics and in Theoretical Computer Science, as part of an integrated Ph.D. programme. All candidates successful in the course work of this programme shall be awarded an M.Sc. degree.
  • At SNBNCBS, graduates with B.Sc. (Physics) / B.E. / B.Tech. degree will be considered for the integrated Post-B.Sc.-Ph.D. programme in subject areas mentioned above.
  • At IIA, graduates with B.Sc. (Physics / Mathematics) / B.E. / B.Tech. in Electrical / Instrumentation / Engineering Physics / Electronics and Communications / Computer Science and Engineering / Optics and Photonics will be considered.
  • At NBRC, B.Sc. (Physics/ Mathematics) & B.E./ B.Techi (Computer Science) will be considered for integrated M.Sc-Ph.D in Neuroscience.

Integrated M.Tech – Ph.D. Programme at IIA
