Shrimati Lakshmi Devi, February, 1916; 2 s. and 1 d.; joined non-cooperation movement, 1921; actively participated in Labour movement from 1921 onwards; suffered imprisonment for Satyagraha, 1932; Secretary, Textile Labour Association, Ahmedabad, 1922-46; Member, Legislative Assembly, Bombay, 1937-39 and 1947-50; Parliamentary Secretary (Labour & Excise), Bombay Government, 1937-39; Minister for Labour and Housing, Bombay Government, 1947-50; Trustee, Kasturba Gandhi Memorial Trust; Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, 1950-52 and 1960-63; Chairman, Bharat Sevak Samaj till July, 1965; President, Bharat Sevak Samaj, 1964-65; was Professor of Economics, National College, Bombay; Member, National Planning Committee; Secretary Hindustan Mazdoor Sevak Sangh; Chairman, (i) Bombay Housing Board, 1946-48 and (ii) Standing Committee of the Ahmedabad Municipality, 1940-42; went to Geneva as a delegate to the 30th Session of the International Labour Conference in 1947; worked on Freedom of Association Committee appointed by I.L.C.; largely instrumental in organising in May, 1947, the Indian National Trade Union Congress; appointed a substitute Government Delegate, Asian Regional Conference, 1947; elected Member, Economic Programme Committee of the All India Congress Committee; was Leader of the Indian Delegation to the Colombo Plan Consultative Committee, 1955; President, 4th Session of the I.L.O. Asian Regional Conference, New Delhi, 1957; led the Indian Delegation to the International Labour Conference held at Geneva in 1959; Member, First Lok Sabha, 1952-57, Second Lok Sabha, 1957-62; Third Lok Sabha, 1962-67 and Fourth Lok Sabha, 1967-70; Minister of Planning and Irrigation and Power, Governmant of India, 1952-57; Minister of Labour & Employment and Planning, 1957-63; Minister of Home Affairs, Government of India, September, 1963—November, 1966 and Minister of Railways, February 18, 1970 to March 17, 1971.
