Social And Cultural Activities
Entertained Indian Army Jawans after conflicts with China (1962) and Pakistan (1965 and 1971) by organising Ajanta Arts Welfare Troupe (with blessings from Pt. Nehru) and visiting various sectors where Indian Army Jawans were wounded in action; led a cultural delegation of eminent artists to Bangladesh (1971) to entertain Indian Army and Mukti Bahini; made a film, Dard Ka Rishta on cancer and its cure and donated its profit to Tata Memorial Hospital and offered the film free to Pakistan and Bangladesh for raising funds for cancer treatment; brought drugs from U.S.A. for India’s first bone marrow transplant operation at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital; collected and handed over to Chief Minister, Rs. 42,00,000 for the earthquake victims of Maharashtra and personally visited and provided blankets and utensils to victims in Latur and Osmanabad; persuaded Indo-Pak Cultural Society, Southall, U.K. to contribute generously for Bihar Relief Fund and brought and presented to the then Prime Minister Smt. Gandhi a cheque of 5000 pounds in 1967; established the Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation in U.S.A., U.K., Canada, Germany and Holland and with the help of this fund, supplied medical equipments worth 3 million U.S. dollars to different charitable hospitals in the country for treatment of cancer; organised a rally in 1985 for providing basic amenities to the people living in slums; made a personal contribution of Rs. 1,00,000 during the Chinese aggression to the then Defence Minister, Shri Y.B. Chavan; organised a few international conferences on drug abuse; visited different parts of the country to promote AIDS awareness; visited Bhagalpur after communal riots there; conducted relief work and arranged relay hunger strike of Artistes and Technicians of film industry for peace in Mumbai after 1992-93 riots and resigned as a Member of Parliament in protest against the riots; helped Mr. Imran Khan, the Pakistani cricketer in raising 1,00,000 pounds for building a cancer hospital in his mother’s name through a fund raising dinner, at Birmingham, U.K.; led a cultural delegation to the Soviet Union consisting of eminent artists in 1967 to perform at Soviet Union’s celebrations of India’s Twentieth year of Independence; organised a show under the guidance of Begum Abida Ahmed for the Ghalib Centenary Celebrations at National Stadium, New Delhi and arranged gatherings and Mushairas of Indian poets in U.K. for Ghalib Centenary Celebrations; helped Shri Nitindra Narayan Roy to swim the English Channel; helped an ailing poor boy for a heart operation performed in the U.S.A.

Records M.T., Lucknow to support his displaced family; organised and led Mahashanti Padyatra from Mumbai to Amritsar in 1987, travelling 2,000 kilometres with daughter Priya and 80 other individuals for peace and harmony in Punjab; undertook a peace march with 14 persons and daughter Priya in 1988, from Nagasaki to Hiroshima (Japan) covering 500 kilometres for world peace and nuclear disarmament; in 1955, drove through Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, North Eastern States of India, West Bengal, Bihar and reached Red Fort, New Delhi, travelling 10,000 kilometres spreading awareness among the youth on the sacrifices of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Indian National Army; inaugurated a prestigious Convention of American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin in 1997; attended the launching event of the Space Mission (with Kalpana Chawla as a crew member) in U.S.A. in 1997 as a specially invited guest; addressed a Symposium of Non-resident Indians in U.S.A. on the subject “Nation Building of India” in 1996 and the Asian Community in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, 1997; awarded Padmashree in 1968; former Director, Board of Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation, Ltd.; appointed member, Film and Television Institute of India by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; served as a member of the jury at Leipzig Film Festival; honoured with “Shiromani Award” by the Institute of Sikh Studies; was appointed Chairman of Anti-Narcotics Cell of AICC(I) by the then Congress President Shri Rajiv Gandhi; Patron, Spastic Society of India; recipient of “Order of the Peoples” National Award by the All India Artiste Association, Simla, 1984 for work in the field of cancer treatment and aid for physically handicapped; honoured with Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award in 1998, by Late Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, former President of India for promoting peace, harmony, fight against violence and terrorism; received Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Award for National Integration and Communal harmony in 1997; honoured with Great Son of the Soil Award by All India Conference of Intellectuals, 1997; presented the lifetime Achievement Award by Screen Videocon for services to the Film Industry, 1999; honoured with “Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Award” for International Peace, Communal Harmony, Unity and National Integration, by Alaami Urdu Conference, New Delhi, 1988; received “Hakim Khan Suri Award” for services of permanent value to the cause of national integration, by Maharana Mewar Foundation and donated the cheque which was given with a citation, for the improvement of education in Rajasthan; received “National Integration Award” from Priyadarshini Academy, Mumbai in July 1989 for outstanding contribution to the cause of National Integration; honoured by the Indian Society of Clinical Oncology in 1984; honoured by Marine Lines Jaycess, Mumbai with “Man of the Year” Award for 1987 for contribution to the field of cinema, social arts and politics; appointed Justice of Peace (Special Executive Magistrate) in 1975 by the Government of Maharashtra.
