Castes)—1977]:  s. of late Shri Basavayya; b. at  Alur, August 10, 1922; ed. at Central College and Government College, Bangalore; m. Smt. Gouramma, May 8, 1952; 2 s. and 5 d.; Advocate and Agriculturist; previously associated with the Congress upto  the freedom movement, then with the K.M.P. P., 1952—54 and again with the Congress since 1954; Participated in the Freedom Movement in 1942 and 1947; Member, (i) Syndicate, Mysore University, and (ii) Secondary Education Board, Mysore; President, Sri D. Sanjivaiah Education Society, Ashokapuram; Founder-President, A.K. Hostel, Chamarajanagar; Member, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, 1952—70; Member, (i) Official Language Committee, (ii) Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Policy Committee, (iii) Estimates Committee, and (iv) Land Reforms Committee of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly; Minister of (i) Forest, Fisheries and Sericulture, 1962—67, (ii) Revenue and Forests, 1967-6S, and (iii) Agriculture and Horticulture, 1968—70, Government of Mysore; was Member, (i) Rajya Sabha, 1974—77, (ii) Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and (iii) Committee on Government Assurances; Presently Member, Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes; Made a study tour to Japan, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore as a Minister in 1964, Led the Indian Delegation in 1965 to the ‘World Conference’ on Sericulture held in Beirut, Lebanon and after the Conference, undertook a study tour to European countries and U.S.S. R.

Social activities:  Mainly responsible to organise Adi Karnataka Abirudhi Sangh in Chamarajanagar for the uplift of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes; Working for the removal of untouchability, illiteracy and poverty by organising Craft Societies; Agricultural Farming Societies and starting hostels for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students.

Favourite pastime and recreation:  Sports and reading.

Special interests:  Education and Prohibition. 

Sports and clubs:  Volleyball and Indoor games.
