Smt. Sakuntala Subrarmaniam, June 1945; 1 s. and 2 d.; Lawyer and  Political Worker; took, active part in freedom struggle during student days, was imprisoned in 1932 and 1941; was detained during “Quit India Movement” in 1942; Ex-President, Coimbatore District Congress Committee and Member of Working Committee of State Congress Committee; President Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, 1967-68; Interim President, Congress, 1969, Member, Working Committee and Central Parliamentary Board of Congress; Chairman, (i) Committee on the Aeronautics Industry, Government of India, 1967—69, (ii) National Commission on Agriculture, 1970-71, (iii) U.N. Social activities:  While Minister in Madras State was responsible For the introduction of free primary education and mid-day meals programme for poorer children in the State.
