Shrimati Sumitra Devi, January 1921; 5 s. and 3 d.; Lawyer; Founder Member of Maha Haryana Movement since 1930, was detained in connection with this movement in 1930; For about 30 years Member or Vice-Chairman, District Board, Gurgaon and First non-official Chairman of that Board for 15 years; Member, Haryana Development Committee; Founder Member and Secretary, Ahir Education Board, Rewari; President, Gurgaon Ammunition Depot Workers Union for 20 years; President, District Congress and Member, P.P.C.C. and A.I.C.C. for more than 10 years; Member, Punjab Legislative Assembly, 1952—62 and Chairman of its Public Accounts Committee for more than 5 years; General Secretary, Congress Legislature Party, Punjab, for more than 5 years; Member, General Administration and Legislation Committee of Punjab State, 1954—62; Member, Third Lok Sabha, 1962—67; and Member of various important Committees of Lok Sabha during that period.
Social activities: Associated with rural uplift and community development work in Gurgaon District; Also associated with Sanatan Dharm institutions in Gurgaon District and other parts of India; Founder, Sanatan Dharm College, Gurgaon; Helped in the settlement of Meos of Gurgaon, Bharatpur and Alwar Districts; worked for development of small scale and cottage industries in Haryana areas.
Hobbies: Uplift of backward areas and backward classes, especially in rural areas.
Favourite pastime and recreation: Visiting rural areas and participating in their social and gatherings and festivals.
Special interests: Uplift and Development of Rural areas in Haryana region and looking after the interests of persons serving in the army.
