DESAI, SHRI HITENDRA, B.A., LL.B., Congress (Gujarat—Godhra—1977): s. of late Shri Kanaiyalal Desai; b. at Surat, August 9, 1915; ed. at Bombay University and M.T.B. College, Surat, awarded “The Cobden Club Medal” for securing the highest marks in Economics in the Bombay University; m. Smt. Sagunaben, 1954; Lawyer, Political and Social Worker; Whole family plunged into national struggle and almost all the members suffered imprisonment; joined the Civil Disobedience Movement at the very early age of 15 when Mahatma Gandhi began his famous Dandi March; was imprisoned and convicted for no-tax campaign; was member of Working Committee of undivided Congress for sometime; Chairman, Standing Committee, Surat Borough Municipality for many years; Member, (i) Bombay Legislative Assembly, 1957—60, (ii) Gujarat Legislative Assembly, 1960—71; became Education Minister of Bombay State in 1957; after bifurcation of Bombay State was Minister, Gujarat State from 1960 onwards, handled several Departments, Home, Education, Social Welfare, Law and Judiciary, Agriculture, Forest, Prohibition etc.; was Chief Minister of Gujarat from 1965 to 1971; Union Minister of Works and Housing, 1976-77; presently Member, (i) Committee on Public Undertakings and (ii) Privileges Committee.
Social activities: Took prominent part in student and youth movements; organised a study circle named “Jyot Mandal”.
Favourite, pastime and recreation: Reading.
Special interests: Politics, Constitution and Culture.
Publications: Several booklets on political, economic and social topics in Gujarati.
Sports and clubs: Cricket.
Travels abroad: Visited many countries including U.K., in 1968 and 1976, Australia and Singapore in 1969.
