KACHWAI, SHRI HUKAM CHAND, Janata, [Madhya- Pradesh—Ujjain (Res. Sch. Castes)—1977] : s. of Shri Munna Lal Kachwai; b. at Ujjain, July 23, 1933; m. Smt. Ram Kumari Kachwai November 21, 1961; 4 s. and 1 d.; Social Worker and Trade Unionist; previously associated with Jan Sangh, Participated in the Sutyagraha against ban on B.S.S. and was jailed for two months; went on 28 days hunger-strike and suffered imprisonment for 57 days in support of the demand of the workers of Shri Gopal Paper Mills, Yamuna Nagar, 1963; imprisoned several times in connection with political movements; Remained under detention for 19 months and 10 days during the emergency. President (i) Bhartiya Railway Mazdoor Sangh since 1964; (ii) All India Ticket Checking Staff Association, Western Railway, 1969—71; (iii) Guards Association, Western Railway, 1969—71; (iv) Delhi Milk Scheme Employees Union since 1969; (v) Bhartiya Pratiraksha Utpandan Mazdoor Sangh; (vi) Bhartiya Mudranalaya Mazdoor Sangh and (vii) Bhartiya Parivahan Mazdoor Sangh; Patron, New Delhi Municipal Employees Union, Delhi since 1969; Group Commander (Toli Nayak of Chaitanya) Seva Dal, Ujjain; Active Member of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh; Vice-President Akhil Bhartiya Koli Samaj, 1973-75; Member, (i) Second Lok Sabha, 1957—62; (ii) Third Lok Sabha, 1962—67; (iii) Fourth Lok Sabha 1967—70 and (iv) Fifth Lok Sabha, 1971—77; presently Member, Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Social Activities: Collected food and clothing in Ujjain to help the refugees from East Pakistan in 1950—52; provided help to the victims of famine in Jhabua region of Madhya Pradesh; took part in Anti-Cow-Slaughter Movement in 1952; active Member of the Seva Samiti since 1957; worked actively for the eradication of evils of drinking, gambling and child marriage amongst the Koli community.
Favourite pastime and recreation: Swimming.
Special interests: Social service lo Harijans and the poor.
Sports and dubs: Wrestling and Indian games; Member, Lion’s Club, Ujjain.
Travels abroad: Visited Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Burma, Kuwait, Cairo, Athens, Rome, France, Geneva, Frankfurt, U.K., Amsterdam, Beirut and Tehran.
