Jayanti Patnaik, 1953; 1 s. and 2 d.; Journalist; Associated with tenants agitation in Orissa known as Madhupen Praja Andolan, 1953-56; Union Deputy Minister and later Minister of State for Defence, 1973-77; presently Union Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation and Labour; President, State Youth Congress, 1950; Member, Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee and its Working Committee, 1953-60; Member, Orissa P.C.C since January 1978; Member, (i) Standing Committee, All India Newspaper Editors Conference, 1956-60, (ii) Orissa Sahitya Akademi, 1956-67; Fellow, Utkal University Senate, 1957-67; President, All Orissa Basic School Teachers Conference, 1958-73; Member, Fifth Lok Sabha, 1971-77.  

Favourite pastime and recreation:  Swimming and Travelling.  

Special interests:  Study of books on literature, philosophy, religion and history.

Publications:  Gautam Buddha-Biography; Translated Bhartrhari Satakas in verse form in Oriya; Assistant Editor, joint Editor and Editor of ‘Eastern Times’; Editor, ‘Prajatantar’ (Oriya daily) and ‘Paurusha’  (Oriya monthly magazine); large number of articles on travel, wild life, international affairs; Literature etc.  

Travels abroad:  U.K., West Germany, U.A.R. (now Arab Republic of Egypt), Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, U.S.S.R., Afghanistan, France, Italy, Switzerland, U.S.A. and Canada.
