KAMARAJ, SHRI K., [Cong. (O)] Tamilnadu-Nagercoil—1971, Son of Shri Kumarasami Nadar; b. July 15, 1903; Unmarried; ed. at Virudhunagar; was Vice-President and Treasurer of Ramanad District Congress; joined Congress at an early age and was imprisoned for two years during Suit Satyagraha movement; elected Chairman, Municipal Council, Virudhunagar while in jail in 1931; became a Member of the A.I.C.C. and of the Tamilnad Congress Executive in 1931; suffered imprisonment again in 1932, 1941, 1942 and 1945 in connection with national movements: was also an accused in Virudhunagar bomb case but acquitted; Secretary, Tamilnad Congress Committee, 1935; elected to Madras Assembly in 1937, re-elected in 1946, 1952, 1957 and 1962; was Member of Constituent Assembly; became Member of the Congress Working Committee in 1949; Member, Provisional Parliament, 1951; President, Tamilnad Congress Committee, 1939-54; Chief Minister of Madras (now—Tamil Nadu), 1954-63; resigned in 1963 in pursuance of a plan sponsored by himself and supported by Shri Jawaharlal Nehru under which senior Congress leaders were urged to quit of ice and to work for the revitalisation of the party; was President of Indian National Congress from 1964 to 1968; Member Fourth Lok Sabha, 1969-70.
