Shrimati Surya Kumari, February 26, 1926; 2 s. and 1 d.; Agriculturist; associated with Indian National Congress since 1931; along with Shri P.M. Kabalee and Lord Ronaldshay, formed Air Service of India Ltd., for development of Civil Aviation in India; was Director or Air Service of India Ltd. (Scindia Steam Navigation Co. Ltd.), Bombay; was Chairman and Director of many concerns at Bombay and Baroda; Member, Third Lok Sabha, 1962—67; Member, Estimates Committee, 1965-66; Member, (i) Indian Parliamentary Group, (ii) Committee on Subordinate Legislation, (iii) Governing Body of the Constitution Club, (iv) Executive Committee, All India Voters Council; Chairman, National Shipping Board.
Social activities: Formerly Founder and Editor of a weekly publication for the upliftment of Backward Classes; keen social worker since 1945; was Vice-President of Maha-Gujarat Rajasthan Praja Sammelan 1943; during the critical days of 1947, preached harmony and unity along with Shri Ravishankar Maharaj, a noted Gandhian Social worker; Set out on tours in villages on foot in Gujarat; assisted Government of Bombay in police recruitment in an honorary capacity, organised Defence Corps and established Centres for training in self-defence; Secretary, M.Ps, Rifle Club; trained many Members of Parliament in Rifle Shooting; organised many literary functions; granted Scholarships and rendered assistance to deserving backward classes.
Hobbies: Reading, carpentary, masonary work, gardening, shooting, riding and collection of ancient coins.
Favourite pastime and recreation: Touring rural areas and contacting villagers.
Special Interests: Rural upliftment; Economics; Development of Civil Aviation, Defence and Shipping matters.
Accomplishments in letters, art and science: Written short articles, stories; poems; fond of music, art and literature; elected Fellow of Royal Economic Society, London.
Sports and clubs: Plays all games; Cricket Club of India, Bombay; Constitution Club, New Delhi.
