PAINULI, SHRI PARIPOORNANAND, Shastri, M.A., (Cong.) U.P. -Tehri Garhwal—1971, Son of Shri Krishanand Painuli; b. at Tehri, erstwhile Tehri-Garhwal State, November 19, 1924; ed. at Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi and Agra University; m. Shrimati Kunti Rani, March, 1961; 3 d.; Journalist; associated with Congress Socialist Party, then a socialist wing of the Indian National Congress; was President of the Himalayan Hill States Regional Council (now Himachal Pradesh P.C.C.) and Member of A.I.C.C.; imprisoned thrice for a total term of six years—twice in erstwhile Tehri-Garhwal State and once in British Jail during the freedom struggle; successfully led a nonviolent revolt against Tehri-Garhwal State as President of State Praja Mandal which culminated in the overthrow of Tehri Maharaja and establishment of a popular government before the State’s merger in U.P., in 1949.
Social activities.—Served the cause of Harijans, Adivasis, Leprosy patients and the fallen women; former Honorary Secretary, U.P. (West) Harijan Sewak Sangh, Ashok Ashram, and President, Bharat Sewak Samaj, Dehra Pun.
Hobbies.—Photography, hiking and reading.
Favourite pastime and recreation.—Reading of books on the life and customs of Adivasis, Harijans and other backward classes.
Books published.—Over a dozen books in Hindi and English including “A Tourist’s View of the Valley of Gods‘, “Sansad Aur Sansadiya Prakriya” and “Nepal Ka Punarjagran”; received U.P. Government prizes for these two Hindi books.
