SHASTRI, SHRI RAM DHARI, M.A., LL.B., Janata, (Uttar Pradesh—Padrauna—1977): s. of late Shri Nand Prasad Singh; b. at Sohang Mahu Awakhude Village, Deoria District, 1926; ed. at Shri Kashi Vidyapeet, Varanasi, and Lucknow University; m. Smt. Dipa Devi, 1950; 3 s. and 2 d.; Teacher, lawyer, and social worker; Previously, associated with Congress, Socialist Party, 1941-48 Bhartiya Lok Dal; was imprisoned in 1941 for participating in ‘individual’ Satyagraha launched by Congress; remained underground for one year during ‘August 1942’ movement and lateron arrested and detained for three years 1943—46; Participated in the ‘total revolution’ movement launched by Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan; on declaration of Emergency, was detained under M.T.S. A., 1975—77; was a member of Working Committee, (i) Uttar Pradesh Branch of Praja Socialist Party and (ii) Uttar Pradesh Branch of Samyukta Socialist Party; served as a lecturer, Siswa Bazar Inter College, Gorakhpur 1952-55; practised law for about eleven years, 1955—66 during which period, underwent imprisonment six times for participating in various agitations launched by the Praja Socialist Party, President, Azad Sugar Mill Workers’ Union Chitouni, Deoria District; Senior Vice-President, Uttar Pradesh Hind Mazdoor Sabha; Chairman, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute, Saphi Tandwa; Secretary, Managing Committee, Bhagwan Mahabir Hindi College, Fazil Nagar, Deoria; Administrator, Janata Inter College, Sohang, Deoria, District; Member of Managing Committees of a number of schools; Member, Working Committee, Janata Parliamentary Party; Member Uttar Pradesh Legislative, Assembly, 1969-74; was Chief Whip of Samyukta Socialist Party Legislature Group for five years, 1969—74; Minister of State for Public Works in the Uttar Pradesh Government, 1970-71.
