February 19, 1947; Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India; Member, (i) West Bengal Legislative Assembly, 1957-71 and (ii) Working Committee and Central Parliamentary Board of Congress; Minister for Law and Tribal Welfare, West Bengal, 1957-58; appointed Minister of Education and Social Welfare, Government of India, in March, 1971.
Social activities.—Associated with various social welfare organisations; interested in cultural institutions and has given encouragement to many; concerned with the problems of youth and has acted in an advisory capacity to various youth organisations.
Favourite pastime and recreation.—As a triple blue of Calcutta University, continues to maintain interest in sports and follow developments in the sporting world; reads extensively, preference ranging from legal treatises to historical, biographical and autobiographical works.
Sports and Clubs.—Football and cricket; Member, Kalighat Club, Mohan Bagan Club and Calcutta Club; Member, West Bengal Sports Council since 1966.
Travels abroad.—Various countries in Europe and the Far East.
