KRISHNAN, SHRIMATI PARVATHI, B.A. ( Hons.) Oxon C.P.I., (Tamil Nadu—Coimbatore—1977): d. of Dr. P. Subbarayan; b. at Ootacamund, Nilgiris District, March 15, 1919; ed. at Ewart School, Madras, Badminton School, Bristol (England 1 and St. Hugh’s College, Oxford; m. Shri N. K. Krishnan, December, 1942; 1d.; full time worker in the Communist Party of India; has spent nearly three and a half years underground from 1949 to 1952; Member, Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of India; Secretary, All-India Students’ Federation before 1942; General Secretary, Indian People’s Theatre Association; Office-bearer in various trade unions; Member, Standing Committee of the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation, 1962—70; at present Secretary, All-India Trade Union Congress; was connected with the Indian Students’ Movement in Great Britain during the war; was President of the Oxford Majlis and Editor of the Journal of the Federation of Indian Students Societies in England; was a member of the Action Committee of the NCCRS which Led the Railway general strike of May, 1974; Member (i) Rajya Sabha, (1954—57), (ii) Second Lok Sabha ( 1957—62), (iii) Fifth Lok Sabha (1974 – 77) .
Favourite pastime and recreation: Interested in education, social welfare and Indian and Western music, both folk and classical; interested in the theatre movement.
Travels abroad: Represented the AITUC in many Conferences abroad; inaugurated the First International Conference of Working Women held in Budapest (Hungary) in 1956; represented India at the UN Conference for International Women’s Year at Mexico, 1975.
