About Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) District :

Kalaburagi is 623 km north of the state capital of Bengaluru and 200 km from Hyderabad. Although initially part of Hyderabad State, the city is the administrative headquarters of the district. In Kannada kala means stones, buragi means land thus the name kalaburgi – land of stones.

Kalaburagi district is situated in northern Karnataka between 76°.04′ and 77°.42 east longitude, and 17°.12′ and 17°.46′ north latitude, covering an area of 10,951 km². This district is bounded on the west by Vijayapur district and Solapur district of Maharashtra state, on the north by Bidar district and Osmanabad district of Maharashtra state, on the south by Yadgir district, and on the east by Ranga Reddy district of Telangana state.

Kalaburgi is famous for toordal or Pigeon pea and the limestone deposits. As per data released by Govt. of India for Census 2011, Gulbarga is an Urban Agglomeration coming under category of Class I UAs/Towns. Gulbarga city is governed by Municipal Corporation and is in Gulbarga Urban Region. It is a rapidly urbanising city which comes under Kalaburagi Metropolitan area. The city is well known for its many places of architectural, historical and religious importance.

Historic Sites :

  • Archeologically important site of Sannati has seen excavations dating back to Ashoka era and currently Archeological Survey of India is conducting excavation there.
  • Historic settlement have been discovered in Rayan Kollur in Shorapur taluk and Vibuthi halli in Shahapur taluk and on the bank of Bhima river in Jewargi taluk.
  • The fort of Malkhed was the seat of Rashtrakuta empire and that of Gulbarga was seat of Bahamani Kingdom. The fort at Gulbarga also has largest single dome masjid which is also second largest in the world.
Religious Places :

  • Deval Ghanagapur in Afzalpur taluk attracts lakhs of devotees every year.
  • Khaja Bandenawaj Darga is a famous sufi darga of Khaja Bandenawaj.
  • Sharana Basaveshwara Temple is a famous temple of Saint Sharana Basaveshwar. It also has a lake adjacent to it which arrtract lakhs of devotees and tourist.
  • Jayateerth math in Malkhed is a place where Sri Teekacharya Vrundavana is there, and lakh of people visit every year.
  • Buddavihar is recently inaugurated by her Excellency The President of India on 7th Jan 2009.
Ecological :

  • Bonal lake : It is a famous tank which attracts the flamingos, egrets and many aquatic fowls which could be a star attraction.
  • Yeti poth nala and Nazarapur falls : These falls are the major falls in Gulbarga. There are magnificent to view in rainy days.
  • Chandrampalli Dam : It is a about 10 Km from Chincholi and has the Gottan Gotta forest in the background. It is most suitable for Eco tourism.
  • Gottam Gotta forest : Around 7 km from chandrapalli. It is an ideal place for trekking.
  • Uplloan Hills : Around 10 km from Gulbarga. It is highly suitable place for to visit in and around Gulbarga City.
  • The Kesaratgi Farm : An existing farm of the Zilla Panchayat. It has lot of potential to be developed as a picnic spot in Gulbarga.
