NELLORE District situated in the South Eastern portion of the state with a costal length of 163 KM bounded by Bay of Bengal on the East. The district was known as VIKRAMA SIMHAPURI until 13th Century and later it came to be referred to as Nellore.

Origin of the Name

Historically the district was under the rule of mouryas, sathavahanas, pallavas, cholas, telugcholas, kakatias, pandyans etc. The great Telugu poet Tikkana Somayaji translated 15 parvas of Sanskrit Mahabharata into Telugu in Nellore.

Location

Nellore District, the Southern most Coastal District of Andhra Pradesh lies between 13-30’ and 15-6’ of the Northern latitude and 70-5’ and 80-15’ of the Eastern Longitude and extending over an area of 13076 Sq.Kms, accounting for 4.75% of the total area of the state.

Boundaries

It is bounded on the north by Prakasam District on the East by Bay of Bengal on the South by Chittoor District and Chengalpattu District of Tamilanadu and on the West by Veligonda Hills which separate it from Kadapa District.

Rivers

Pennar, Swarnamukhi and Kandaleru are the rivers in the District, which flows West to East direction and merge into the Bay of Bengal. The Pennar River is the most important river in the District. It has two anicuts one at Sangam and the other at Nellore.

Area of Nellore District

Nellore district is one of the 23 districts of Andhra Pradesh, with a total geographical area of 13,076 sq.km. with 46 mandals and three Revenue Divisions inhabitating the population of 29,66,082(2001-census) spreading across 1200 revenue villages, with 77% of population lives in rural areas.

Overview

An official Census 2011 detail of Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore (Nellore), a district of Andhra Pradesh has been released by Directorate of Census Operations in Andhra Pradesh. Enumeration of key persons was also done by census officials in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh.

Population

In 2011, Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore had population of 2,963,557 of which male and female were 1,492,974 and 1,470,583 respectively. In 2001 census, Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore had a population of 2,668,564 of which males were 1,344,935 and remaining 1,323,629 were females. Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore District population constituted 3.50 percent of total Maharashtra population. In 2001 census, this figure for Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore District was at 3.50 percent of Maharashtra population.

Population Growth Rate

There was change of 11.05 percent in the population compared to population as per 2001. In the previous census of India 2001, Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore District recorded increase of 11.55 percent to its population compared to 1991.
